Gomez @ The Orpheum, Vancouver (12th March 2010)

Typically, support acts are not given a whole lot of mention & recognition. People go to a concert to see the main act, not the support bands. But on Friday night at The Orpheum anybody who rocked up late missed the opportunity to hear Luke Doucet and The White Falcon.

From the moment he took to the stage Luke Doucet was captivating. Several times during the show he would close his eyes & a look of immense concentration would come over his face whilst playing the guitar. That look & that dedication proved to me that he is passionate about his music. This is not a band that is looking to become famous & live in some mansion in LA. No, this is a band that takes pride in each & every song they perform live.

Besides Douset, other members of the band include: Melissa McClelland (who is also his wife), Rich Levesque & Gord Stevenson. Their music is perhaps best described as southern rock - or as me & my friend named it "music that would go well in a Quentin Tarantino movie."

One of my favourite songs of their performance, besides Blood's Too Rich & Emily, Please, was Broken One which Doucet explains is actually about a former girlfriend. The song includes the lyrics:

One day you're gonna miss me / One day you're gonna wake up cold / Then you'll wish that you could kiss me when you're old and you're alone / So cry if you want to / Yeah, you can come undone but you've gotta have a heart to have a broken one.

After Luke Doucet and The White Falcon, Gomez took to the stage. The best thing about Gomez is that they do not just have the one vocalist. Ian Ball, Tom Gray & Ben Ottewell all sing on different tracks which spices up their live show as each have completely different voices.

They sang a mix of classic tracks as well as newer ones such as: Sweet Virginia, Tijuana Lady, We Haven't Turned Around & Whippin' Piccadilly.

Even though the venue accommodated for sit down only events, the bands music made audience members want to rise up out of their seats to dance & sing along. The front portion of the room & all the aisles began to fill up quickly. It became very apparent that even though Gomez may not be the most mainstream band out there, & somehow they have managed to stay under the radar for so many years, the fans they have are very loyal & loving.

Gomez's music is rather hard to describe. It is indie/alternative but it could also be classified as smooth, relaxing music. Basically, it is the type of music that you could play all day long without getting a headache or getting sick of it because it is not in your face & raging.

The setlist for the night was as follows:

1) Tijuana Lady
2) Hamoa Beach
3) If I Ask You Nicely
4) See the World
5) Meet Me In The City
6) Notice
7) Make No Sound
8) Bring Your Lovin' Back Here
9) Ruff Stuff
10) Other Plans
11) Sweet Virginia
12) Little Pieces
13) Girlshapedlovedrug
14) Whippin' Piccadilly
15) Step Inside
16) Airstream Driver

Encore:
17) How We Operate
18) We Haven't Turned Around
